We all make mountains of our mistakes.

If I asked you come down from your Sinai to sift through the bonepile of 2023, what fragment would first catch your eye? What would you find beneath?

Is it that monstrous number, 30,000 dead Palestinians, burning red like a funeral pyre in your worst nightmares?

Is it that one thing you said to someone you love but didn’t mean and it changed everything?

Would you pluck your biggest undone dream from the dust and tuck it in your pocket to carry into yet another year?

Unlearn the waste of a good year.

How curious that billions of us have lived and died and learned the pitfalls of history between those two dots on a brief timeline and yet. We still fail to unlearn. Unlearn the crooked violence of the last generation. Unlearn the waste of a good year for the promise of more.

We are walking the stolid desert of our own precious time, convinced there is always another verdant valley just up ahead. Another chance to do it right the next time.

Live like second chances don't exist. This is it.

I mean not to dissuade you from fresh starts or new beginnings. I mean only to digest my own stupid impulse – and surely yours, too – to put off fully living til tomorrow. To indignantly ignore the ease with which death might find me anywhere, at any time, and force me out the back door before I’m good and ready.

As I peek over the crest of an old year, peering into the next, I suppose the only 2024 resolution I have is to live like second chances don’t exist. Like there is no later. Like this is it.

“Death must be so beautiful. To lie in the soft brown earth, with the grasses waving above one's head, and listen to silence. To have no yesterday, and no tomorrow. To forget time, to forgive life, to be at peace.”
